Candle Care + FAQs

✨ The First Burn Matters

Your candle’s very first light sets the stage for its entire life. To ensure a long, even glow, keep your candle lit until the wax melts all the way to the edge of the glass. This is especially important during the first burn. A full wax pool prevents tunneling—where the flame burns straight down the middle and leaves wasted wax along the sides. With patience at the start, your candle will shine evenly and beautifully, all the way down.

🔥 Wood Wick Wisdom

Our wood wicks are self‑trimming, so they rarely need attention. If the wick grows too long and produces smoke or soot, simply pinch off the charred remains before relighting. This keeps your flame clean and steady.

⏳ Burn Time & Safety

  • Never burn your candle for more than 4 hours at a time.

  • Always place it on a flat, heat‑resistant surface away from flammable materials.

  • Allow the candle to cool completely before handling or moving.

  • When the metal wick clip becomes visible at the bottom, it’s time to retire your candle. The clip lifts the wick to control temperature and prevent glass breakage—so resist the temptation to burn the very last bit.

Why is coconut wax better?

At Shift Hawthorn, we believe candles should be as kind to the planet as they are to people. That’s why we use coconut wax: a sustainable, pesticide-free crop that requires no deforestation to thrive. Our wax is cold-pressed, natural, and food-safe, ensuring a pure burn. It lasts longer, burns cleaner, and avoids the toxins and headaches often associated with other waxes. Each candle is a commitment to sustainability, health, and mindful consumption.

Why wood wicks?

I’ve always been drawn to the warm ambience and soft crackling sound of a wood wick. Growing up in the woods of Maltby, Washington, a wood-burning stove heated our home and bonfires brought people together. That sense of connection lives on in every Shift Hawthorn candle. Our wood wicks are manufactured in the USA, naturally processed, and sourced from sustainable forests. Unlike cotton wicks, they emit no harmful toxins and produce far less carbon build-up, debris, and sooting. Each flame is a reminder of both quality and care—for the planet, for artisans, and for you.

Why a handblown drinking glass?

At Shift Hawthorn, we believe a candle should be more than something you burn and toss away. The low-priced, mass-produced candle often comes at a hidden cost—both human and environmental. We chose hand-blown glass because it honors the artistry of skilled makers, ensures fair wages, and creates something lasting. When the flame is gone, the vessel lives on as a beautiful, reusable drinking glass. It’s not just a candle; it’s a piece of craftsmanship designed to be cherished.
